About Randy

Being named “Randy” isn’t the only qualification necessary to be a Boeing blogger – but it doesn’t hurt! Randy Tinseth has been with the company for more than 25 years - in a number of areas, including engineering, sales, and marketing. It gives him a unique perspective on all things Commercial Airplanes.

Appointed vice president, marketing in April 2007, Randy T. is continuing to spread the word around the globe about Boeing’s outstanding products and world-class services. A big part of the job involves understanding and communicating market requirements and the market outlook, and supporting market positioning and sales activities. He also meets with financial analysts, industry observers, and airline customers, and talks with reporters in the aviation and business news media.

Of course, hosting the Boeing blog, Randy’s Journal, is another key part of these efforts.

Randy’s Journal started in January 2005 as a way to expand the conversation in the “blogosphere.” Originated by Randy Baseler, this new venture in corporate blogging quickly mushroomed, and is on its way to its first million visits.

Now hosted by Randy Tinseth, the blog continues as a place to find inside stuff about the commercial aviation world - scoops about new airplane programs, marketing insights, or cool new images or videos.

Randy T. began his career at Boeing in June 1981, as a flight test engineer on the certification of the Boeing 757 and 767.

He joined the Marketing team in 1989, in the Airplane Economics Group. He worked as part of the team that implemented new versions of Boeing’s aircraft maintenance and operating cost models. Since he loves numbers, this was a great fit.

Randy later moved on to the aircraft Sales team, traveling to Europe, Africa, and Asia. From 1997 - 2001, he served as a Boeing sales director in North America, leading BCA efforts at United Airlines, Northwest Airlines, UPS, and Spirit Airlines.

Randy left Sales to lead the Product Marketing team, telling the BCA story to customers, media, financial institutions, government officials, and other groups. During this time, the Marketing team launched the new 787 livery, the “Name Your Plane” effort which led to the selection of the Dreamliner name, and the “newairplane.com” Website.

Just prior to taking on his role as V.P., marketing, Randy was Customers Leader for the 747-8 Program, developing marketing and in-service support strategies for the new 747-8 program, and helping to prepare the market and refine the focus on the -8 family.

Randy grew up in Kalispell, Montana. He holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Cornell University – an Ivy League education for a boy from a little town in Montana. In 1986, after a lot of night classes, he received a MBA from Seattle University.

He’s been married to Ellen for more than 20 years and has three children. He enjoys getting out on the water - swimming, boating, and floating. He also enjoys snow skiing and golf, and vacations at least two weeks a year at the family cabin on a lake.
